Toufoul Abou-Hodeib

Associate Professor of Modern Middle East History, University of Oslo

Toufoul Abou-Hodeib qualified as an architect from the American University of Beirut (BA, 1998) before pursuing her graduate studies in social sciences at the University of Amsterdam (MA, 2002) and in history of culture at the University of Chicago (PhD, 2010). Her doctoral dissertation investigates the home’s role in mediating the experience of modernity and in formulating cultural “authenticity” for an emerging middle class in late Ottoman Beirut.

Abou-Hodeib was a fellow (2010–2011) of the research program “Europe in the Middle East—The Middle East in Europe,” Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and a member (2011–2012) of St Antony’s College and Lecturer at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford. She is author of A Taste for Home: The Modern Middle Class in Ottoman Beirut (Stanford University Press, 2017), as well as articles in History Compass, International Journal of Middle East Studies, and International Journal of Maritime History, among other venues.
