Areej Sabbagh-Khoury
Areej Sabbagh-Khoury is the Inaugural Post-doctoral Research Associate in Palestine and Palestinian Studies at Brown University 2016-2017. She is also an associate researcher at Mada al-Carmel – The Arab Center for Applied Social Research. Her current book project examines relations between members of leftist Zionists kibbutzim and Palestinian villagers in Northern Palestine within a settler colonial framework. Sabbagh-Khoury completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Tel Aviv University. She contributed to several book chapters and articles on citizenship, memory, gender and settler colonialism, among them “Palestinian Predicaments: Jewish Immigration and Refugees Repatriation.” She also co-edited two volumes of The Palestinians in Israel: A Guide to History, Politics, and Society: the first volume was published in 2011 and the second on December 2015 (both volumes were published in English, Hebrew and Arabic). She has received several awards and grants for her research, among them the PARC fellowship; the Fulbright Post-doctoral Scholar Award year 2015-2016; the 2015 Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Columbia University.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY
Middle East Studies at Brown University invites applications for the inaugural post-doctoral fellowship in Palestinian Studies. The position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal to a maximum of two years. The fellowship is part of the ongoing initiative, New Directions in Palestinian Studies, which seeks to critically explore and facilitate innovative lines of academic inquiry in this field. We especially welcome candidates who thrive in an interdisciplinary environment and whose work is informed by comparative and global perspectives.
Qualifications
The position is open to all the humanities and social science disciplines. Scholars who received PhDs within five years of the application deadline are eligible to apply. Residence in the Providence area is required for most of the duration of the appointment, unless approval for research-related travel is obtained in advance. Fellows will teach one class a year, take a leadership role in organizing the annual New Directions in Palestinian Studies Symposium, advise students, and participate in research-related programming on campus. The annual stipend is $55,000, plus a health insurance subsidy. Additional funding for conference-related travel and other research expenses is available.

Review of applications will begin November 24.The following materials should be submitted prior to that date to the application portal in interfolio (apply.interfolio.com/32300):
1) A brief cover letter stating the applicant’s academic field, area of specialization, and a short summary of the proposed work during the fellowship period.
2) A curriculum vitae.
3) A statement describing the applicant’s proposed research for the duration of the fellowship: this may emphasize the preparation of a book manuscript for publication, but should also include a summary of the research questions, goals, and methodological approaches of additional research. The statement should not exceed 2,000 words, including all bibliographic references and supplementary material.
4) Three letters of recommendation from scholars familiar with the applicant’s research.
5) Writing sample.
6) A proposed class syllabus.
Skype interviews will be conducted with short-listed candidates. Awards will be announced in early 2016.
